Cohesion Policy is an efficient tool, even during hard times

On the 2nd of September 2022, Prague welcomed top-level politicians from EU member states within the framework of Czech Presidency, who discussed options, benefits, and future of cohesion policy. A modern and flexible tool for the development of all regions of the European Union contributes to a more balanced development of regions, and the fulfilment of shared priorities, but it is also an im-portant tool responding to immediate needs on the spot, thus helping to handle current challenges.

"Cohesion Policy has reacted promptly and efficiently in supporting Member States and Regions face the Covid crisis and the arrival of millions of refugees fleeing the war in Ukraine. We should now turn to the core business of Cohesion as a long-term investment policy for the transformation, resilience and capacity building of every region as well as for reinforcing local democracy through its governance model,” said Elisa Ferreira, EU commissioner for cohesion and reforms.

This policy is dynamic thanks to its flexibility, which allows for its adaptation to local conditions with a successful impact.

"The impact of cohesion policy lasts for a long time after the termination of programmes, and it probably extends to other regions and countries of the EU, apart from those where the programmes were implemented. It is assumed that fifteen years after the termination of the implementation period, each 1 EURO spent within this tool for the period 2014-2020 makes 2.7 EURO of additional GDP on EU level," specified Ivan Bartoš, Deputy Prime Minister for Digitisation and Minister of Regional Development. It is a challenge for all of us to figure out how the EU and its funds can help with resolving the current energy crisis. On behalf of MMR, I can state that we are preparing a transfer of a part of the funds to the operational programme Environment, in order to support more projects focusing on energy savings of cities and municipalities. Therefore, we are resolving the energy crisis on the EU level," Minister Bartoš added.
