The Habitat III conference was one of the first UN implementation conferences on the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the framework of “The 2030 Agenda” approved in September 2015 at the UN summit in New York. The Habitat III conference agenda mainly concerned achieving objective no. 11 (“Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable”) with all 17 goals of “The 2030 Agenda”.
The goal and official outcome of “Habitat III” implementation was the acceptance of a document called the Habitat III New Urban Agenda (NUA). This new agenda for cities was intended to be universal and consistent with the principles of “The 2030 Agenda” and to serve as the basis for renewal of the urban development global framework. This new agenda used the experience gained from past Habitat conferences, but also offered answers and solutions for development and challenges that had arisen since the Second UN Conference on Housing and Urban Development “Habitat II”, i.e. the unusually rapid growth of urban areas; economic concentration in urban areas; climate change impacts; increased burden on human health and natural resources and biodiversity; the need for sustainable housing and buildings; geographic and social disparity and exclusion; increased insecurity and violence; environmental degradation; food safety; and the specific needs of displaced people and migrants.
The EU and its member states are committed to supporting sustainable urbanisation in order to address all relevant new and emerging issues in a holistic and unified manner. To reach this goal, the EU and its member states considered it relevant that the outcome of the “Habitat III” conference and NUA focus more on results, taking into account the universal character of “The 2030 Agenda”, thus reflecting all three dimensions of sustainability
